It didn’t occur to you that it counted as actual abuse.
Really.
Not the yelling or the starving or the hitting or the touching or the-
It didn’t.
Winter loves you, you knew. She takes care of you when she can. You didn’t really think that someone could love you and still have it count. That that was even a way to be hurt beyond alleyways and tainted drinks and small children being kidnapped. That it even counted as-
Your mother tried. It never occurred to you that leaving you alone so much was neglect and therefore abuse.
Father was a cold man. Its how it was. He gave you all the funds you could ever need. You thought it was normal. To expect this much of you. To get smacked by the person in charge when you did something wrong. That it could be abuse even when you are provided with as many shiny things as you could ever want.
It never occurred to you that it should be anything else.
That you should remember so much more.
It didn’t happen all at once.
I
You thought your new teammates were the most bizarre people you had ever met. Blake was a little better, despite all the bad blood. She acted in expected ways. They didn’t. Ruby and Yang were so fundamentally different from you and Winter and it was unsettling.
(Ruby wasn’t cowed and Yang backed off when Ruby didn’t want to do something. Who was in control?)
II
Winter visited. And Blake pulled you aside on the second day of her stay and asked if you were ok. You thought Blake was being weird. You had been a little less -there- and quite a bit more numb as of late, sure. But fine! You later find a book of Blake’s on your nightstand after Winter leaves.
It was a charming children’s fantasy novel about people with personable, talking auras taking the shape of animals when not in use. You couldn’t put it down.
But a line nagged at the back of your head.
“She likes to show off her new pet huh?”
It resonated a little, and you couldn’t figure out why.
III
Yang hesitantly asked you why you never went to the infirmary after rough spars or grim hunting sessions once after a rough fight where you were just going to half-limp to the shower and bandage your shoulder that was still bleeding a bit and then to bed. You responded with confusion and a touch of ‘what you think I can’t handle this?’
Yang blinked and seemed to reevaluate what she was going to say.
What?” You snapped.
Yang hurriedly said, “If you think you’re fine then ok! But uh, even the full-fledged huntresses would get something for your shoulder wound there. And also your leg. You hit that tree pretty hard…”
You snorted. “I’ve had plenty of training injuries worse. Im fine. The instructors are a bit soft, Father says if you get injured and it’s not life threatening or crippling then it serves as a reminder for your mistakes.”
(...You should NOT have said that that bitingly. Or at all. Blame it on the migraine.)
“...Your fathers an asshole.”
“No! It’s perfectly reasonable!”
Yang gives you a long look as you brace yourself against the wall. Suddenly a little dizzy.
She abruptly switches the conversation.
“Well in any case how about you accompany me to the infirmary if you are so sure you’re fine and wait with us till Blake and Ren get out?”
(Ren had dislocated his shoulder and Blake had gotten bitten by something that was poisonous. Ruby was debriefing with an instructor still.)
So you went.
“Have you ever been in an infirmary?”
Yang meant it as a joke, probably. And also probably rhetorically, but you take things a bit literally and you were tired so you answered back.
“Twice.”
One of the maids had a minor healing semblance that was used to prevent infection, so you never needed to, really.
You push your hair out of your face and linger your hand over your eye scar.
Yang noticed, you think, but didn’t say anything.
But soon enough you were at the medical bay and there was a nurse beelining for you, so it would be a waste to refuse.
